Browser extension
Install AgentID Browser Protection in Chrome or Edge and connect it to an AI system to protect ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot.
AgentID Browser Protection is a Chromium (Manifest V3) extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This page describes version 0.1.12.
What it protects
On validated AI apps (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot) the extension:
- checks prompts before they are sent: masked prompts are rewritten in place, blocked prompts are not sent and the reason is shown,
- checks pasted text: a long paste is checked together with the text already in the message box, and the whole message is inserted already masked, so it is ready to send,
- protects files: supported uploads (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, XLSM, PPTX, PPTM, Markdown, images, and text files such as TXT, CSV, JSON, LOG, XML, HTML, EML and RTF) are replaced with a protected
.txtcopy; the original is never uploaded after protection. Up to four files are checked at a time; further files are not uploaded and the message says which. Files of a type AgentID cannot check (for example legacy DOC/XLS/PPT, OpenDocument, iWork, EPUB, archives, audio and video) follow the system's failure mode: on fail-close they are not uploaded; on fail-open they are uploaded with a warning that they were not checked, and the activity log records their type and size (never the name or content). A file chosen, dropped or pasted while another check is running is refused; choose it again when the check finishes, - logs answers: the assistant's response is captured from the page after it settles and logged to the activity log,
- restores masked values in the page for the user when restoration is on, across the whole conversation and after a reload.
On all other HTTPS sites it discovers AI use from metadata only (which AI apps are used), without reading or protecting content. See AI discovery.
Before you start
You need an AI system with the Browser Extension target. See Register an AI system. Choose the masking and blocking you want in Guardrails.
Install
On the system's Integration tab click Install Browser Protection. It opens the extension's Chrome Web Store page; click Add to Chrome.
Use this when your registration wizard offers the AgentID browser extension (Chrome, Edge) download.
- Download the ZIP and unpack it into its own folder.
- Open
chrome://extensions(Edge:edge://extensions) and turn on Developer mode. - Remove an older AgentID extension if one is installed.
- Click Load unpacked and choose the unpacked folder.
Force-install the extension and push its configuration through Chrome or Edge enterprise policy. See Rollout with Chrome policy.
Connect it to your AI system
Copy the credentials
On the system's Integration tab, generate an API key and copy the System ID and API key. For a whole team, use an enrollment token instead; see Rollout.
Open the extension popup
Click the AgentID icon in the browser toolbar and keep Enabled on.
Enter the credentials
Under Standard setup enter the System ID and API Key. The base URL and enrollment token fields under Managed deployment options are only for deployments managed by IT.
Save and test
Click Save & test connection. The test runs a real, lightweight guard check; it is logged as a health check.
Reload AI tabs
Reload open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot tabs so the extension can attach to them.
Check that it works
Send a prompt with a test name and e-mail address in ChatGPT. With masking on, the AI receives placeholders such as <PERSON_NAME_1>; the popup shows the Last Guard Result and Last Output Log, and the turn appears in the system's activity log.
The popup also shows the configuration, its status, the SSO Session (if SSO is used) and Adapter Health per app.
Updates
A Chrome Web Store installation updates automatically. A ZIP installation does not: download the new package, remove the old extension and load the new folder.
